Alla scoperta dello street food con VendrTv
Ciao a tutti!! Oggi sul blog di HiNii abbiamo un ospite internazionale, direttamente dagli States con un progetto davvero sfizioso che vogliamo farvi conoscere! Ovviamente l’intervista è in inglese!

Nii: hello Daniel tell me in 140 character what is VendrTv about?
Daniel: VendrTV is a weekly podcast all about the best street food in America.

Nii: how long are u doing this project? Tell us a bit of your story. Which is the most unexpected event in your story as a blogger/vlogger? How do you choose where to go in your trips and how your episodes come to life?
Daniel: started the project on Feb 15, 2009 – so just shy of two years. I went to school for design, and did my thesis in the design of food trucks. Never thought it would turn into a career, and really just started it as a side project with some friends. But people seemed to love it and it really took off. Now we’ve traveled from Maine to Miami, and all the way across west. I think the most unexpected events are meeting people in the street that watch the show. It’s always a great feeling to connect to people that you didn’t expect to, out of the blue. As far as selecting episodes, we work with food writers in different cities to identify the best trucks to cover.

Alla scoperta dello Street Food con VendrTvNii: it seems that VendrTv is also a good business for you…How did it became a business? Do you have an agency behind your project? How do you finance your trips? You could be a good examples for the italian entrepreneurs.. do you have something to suggest to the italian people that are trying to make their own business?
Daniel: the show was all financed out of pocket, and eventually made enough money off of advertising to cover expenses. We also had the good grace of working with people in the industry that had their own technology or, in the beginning, were able to get the gear to shoot the show for free. I think the best thing I can suggest for anyone looking to start a business is to follow your passions, and try and be as specific about what you’re doing as possible. Focus makes it much easier to market anything.

Nii: Since you talk about street food..are you trying to give a new status to this kind of food? Here in Italy you go to eat street food mostly when you go out from the disco…but is not something really healthy or high quality food in general.. is it like this also in other countries?
Daniel: I think eating food from the street is very old. It harks back to days of bazaars and open air markets. And, while it takes many forms in other parts of the world, it’s started be very much in vogue in the United States. No longer is it all unhealthy, in fact there are many artisanal options available, with food that’s sourced locally and humanely.

Nii: Did u already come in Italy? Would you like to come here? maybe you can make a gastronomic tour also here..it would be great!
Daniel: I’ve not yet visited Italy, but I sure would love to.
Nii: we wait for you then!!

Nii: which is your favourite street food in the world? One that you tried! And the strangest.. the one that maybe you really couldn’t eat?
Daniel: I’ve never met anything I couldn’t eat. I’ve tried amazing things off the street, and dishes too outrageous for most stomaches. I think my favorite street food in the world are Döner Kebab carts in Berlin.

Nii: Do you have any particular plans for the future of your project? C’mon give us some scoop :)
Daniel: well, sure. I’m working on a book about street food, and a television show. I’m also starting a few other web shows, and run an email newsletter about food events in New York, where I live. I like to keep busy!

Nii: HiNii, our project, is a web/mobile service that suggests you the best things to do in your leisure time (restaurant, bar, discos, pubs, events,…), can you tell me three places that you love and tell me why they are special for you?
Daniel: well, I’d have to tell you about three of my favorite places to eat in NYC:
Prosperity DumplingProsperity Dumplings - Really inexpensive chinese dumplings, from a tiny shop, that’s open late an always has a line. Nothing better than grabbing one of the four seats in the place, and feast on a steamy plate of dumplings when it’s Pizzeria Di Fara'scold outside.
Diner – Wonderful restaurant in my neighborhood that has probably the best burger of my life (and I’ve had a lot of them!). All the food is humanely sourced – they even own their own butcher shop. Yum!
DiFara’s Pizza Sorry Italy, you’ve got to watch out. DiFara’s makes the best New York style pizza in, well… New York! Dom DiMarco has been making pies there for years, and while he’s grown a bit old, he’s still the only one allowed to make the pizza. Slowly, by hand, with great skill and precision.
